Susanne Hellmuth

I am an independent researcher in molecular genetics at the University of Bayreuth. My research addresses the regulation of the human cell cycle, with a focus on mitotic surveillance mechanisms that safeguard genome integrity and ensure faithful chromosome segregation.
A central aspect of my work investigates how mitotic timing information is encoded through MDM2-dependent regulatory processes to enable p53 activation and G1 arrest following aberrant mitosis.

In parallel, I study how DNA double-strand breaks at human centromeres are resolved in a cell cycle–dependent manner and how this process supports CENP-A deposition and centromere maintenance during late mitosis.More broadly, my research encompasses DNA damage repair pathway choice, mitotic stress responses, intrinsic apoptosis, cohesin resolution dynamics, and cancer-relevant cell fate decisions.

Teaching and Supervision

I supervise and teach in the master specialisation module 'Cell Cycle & Cancer', coordinating the experimental course and leading the accompanying literature seminar. I also contribute to practical teaching in immunology and supervise multiple bachelor and master theses in molecular genetics and cell biology.
